Educational Resources
The Polk County Public School system is the eighth largest school district in Florida and among the 40 largest in the nation. The school system
serves more than 92,000 students from pre-kindergarten through adult school classes. It oversees nearly 160 educational sites and centers, including
62 elementary schools, 19 middle schools and 18 senior high schools with an array of magnet, choice and charter options. The public school system is
the largest employer in Polk County with nearly 12,000 employees, more than half of whom are teachers. During the 2005-2006 school year, 30,000
community volunteers served as mentors, readers and business partners contributing more than one million volunteer hours in the public school system.
Several private and parochial schools serve kindergarten through senior high schools students.
Polk Community College, a two-year institution, offers complete career programs. Four-year institutions within commuting distance include Florida Southern College, Southeastern University, the University of South Florida, Webber International University, Warner Southern College, Webster University, the University of Central Florida and the University of Tampa. Two career centers, Ridge Career Center and Traviss Career Center, are also nearby.
